Mary Berridge, a Conversation about Finding Meaning in Challenging Situations, Nostalgia for the Soviet Life, and Photography

Il y a un presque jour pour jour, Raphael Shammaa réunissait dans une conversation vidéo, les membres du Birthday Club, cinq femmes photographes diplômées de Yale à la même époque. Aujourd’hui, il consacre cet entretien à l’une d’entre elles : Mary Berridge. Dans son travail, elle s’intéresse à la manière dont les gens trouvent un sens à leur vie dans des circonstances difficiles. Elle a été exposée dans de nombreux musées, a reçu de plusieurs prix, le TIME a nommé Mary dans une liste de « 28 femmes photographes américaines méconnues du siècle dernier ».

Mary Berridge is an American photographer whose work has been exhibited in many venues including the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Yale University Gallery of Art and the Princeton University Art Museum. She is interested in how people find meaning in challenging circumstances.

Mary’s photographs have received several awards- among them are: a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Siskind Fellowship, the Lange-Taylor Prize, a NY Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Documentary Project Fund Award, and a LensCulture Portrait Award. She has published three books: A Positive Life: Portraits of Women Living with HIV (Running Press, 1997), On the Eve, Moscow, 1998 (Blue Sky Books, 2014)*, and Visible Spectrum: Portraits from the World of Autism (Kehrer Verlag, 2021/22). Her photographs have been published in numerous anthologies and periodicals, including The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, The Guardian, CNN, TIME, Der Spiegel, Raw View, FotoNostrum and The Best of LensCulture. After earning her MFA from Yale and a BA from the University of Michigan, she went on to teach at Princeton University as well as several other colleges and universities.

Mary lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she serves on the board of the NC Autism Society’s Orange-Chatham chapter.

TIME magazine included Mary in a list of « unsung American female photographers of the past century.”

Raphael Shammaa
Raphael Shammaa, photographe, est né au Caire, en Égypte. Il est arrivé à Paris pour étudier l'art et l'architecture à l'Ecole des Beaux Arts. Il se passionne rapidement pour la photographie, et décide d'intégrer l'école de photographie à Vevey, en Suisse. Il se dirige dans la photographie publicitaire et de mode. Au début des années 60, il décide de vivre le rêve américain et emménage à New York. Son photobook “The Simplicity of the Moment” est classé l’un des 10 meilleurs de l’année 2017 par Elizabeth Avedon et fait partie de la collection permanente de 5 musées ou institutions dont l’International Center of Photography, le Metropolitan Museum of Art et le Brooklyn Museum of Art à New York.
