Le World Press Photo compte parmi les prix, qui récompensent les travaux photojournalistiques, les plus prestigieux. Chaque année au mois d’avril, les noms des photographes primés sont dévoilés dans chacune des nombreuses catégories. Pour cette 64ème édition du World Press Photo, la photo de l’année est celle du photographe danois Mads Nissen avec une image forte et symbolique de la pandémie de la covid-19. Cette image montre une brésilienne de 85 ans enlacée par son infirmière. Un premier câlin reçue depuis plus de 5 mois pour la vieille dame. Une image empreinte d’espoir…

Le jury a choisi parmi les 6 clichés sélectionnés, la photo de presse mondiale de l’année. « The First Embrace » a été réalisée en août dernier, par Mads Nissen (Politiken / Panos). On y voit Rosa Luzia Lunardi (85 ans) enlacée par l’infirmière Adriana Silva da Costa Souza, à la maison de soins Viva Bem, à São Paulo, au Brésil.

Le reportage de l’année a, quant à lui, été remporté par le photographe italien Antonio Faccilongo (Getty Reportage) avec sa série Habibi, qui signifie «mon amour» en arabe. Elle relate des histoires d’amour ayant pour toile de fond le conflit israélo-palestinienne. Le reportage montre l’impact du conflit sur les familles palestiniennes.
