20è édition de PHotoEspaña en 2017 : un anniversaire, un bilan et des perspectives futures tels sont les ingrédients de cette édition spéciale qui se prolongera en 2018. L’occasion de revenir sur les étapes du succès du festival dans une ère globalisée. International et local, il se fait le témoin naturel privilégié des mutations de l’image et de la société. Rencontre à Paris de María García Yelo, directrice du festival, à l’occasion du Prix HSBC dont elle est la conseillère artistique, à l’origine d’ une nouvelle impulsion dans tout Madrid et bien au-delà.

9 lives : Comment l’organisation de l’anniversaire des 20 ans de photoEspana va-t-elle se concrétiser ?
María García Yelo : Le vingtième anniversaire de PHotoEspaña sera célébré en 2017 puisqu’il s’agit de la 20ème édition et en 2018 puisque le festival est né en 1998. A cette occasion, et à partir du 31 mai prochain, nous avons décidé de rassembler des créations et des commissaires de différentes générations, aux approches artistiques différentes. Ces travaux et ces projets seront montrés grâce aux collaborateurs et aux soutiens historiques du festival, les institutions publiques et privées, les sponsors. Notre ambition est de célébrer bien sûr cet anniversaire mais surtout de célébrer la photographie.
M : Quelles seront les principales thématiques de ces célébrations ?
M. G. Y. : Bien que PHotoEspaña soit habituellement un festival thématique, nous n’avons pas souhaité imposer de thème spécifique pour ces deux prochaines éditions afin de promouvoir toutes les photographies. D’une certaine manière, nous explorerons le passé pour comprendre et nous interroger sur les changements survenus ces deux dernières décennies mais nous nous projetterons également dans le futur pour appréhender ce que pourront être la photographie et les arts visuels demain. Je ne peux pas vous en dire plus sur la programmation qui sera révélée le 17 mai prochain, mais je peux vous glisser qu’il y aura une Carte Blanche donnée à un artiste qui fait partie de notre Histoire, dont le regard combine intensité, sensibilité, audace et profondeur.
M : Ces dernieres années, la globalisation et le numérique ont profondément modifié le monde de la photographie, encourageant la créativité, les croisements et hybridations avec l’art contemporain. Comment allez-vous traiter cette ère « post » ?
M. G. Y. : On ne peut pas empêcher l’évolution de la nature. La photographie est étroitement liée à la technologie. Mais attention cela ne veut pas dire que toute image est photographie. S’il n’y a aucune intention, aucun but, aucune émotion à laquelle se confronter alors on ne peut appeler cela photographie.

9 lives : How will you organise the 20th Anniversary and Edition of PHotoEspaña in 2017 and 2018 ?
María García Yelo : The 20th anniversary of PHotoEspaña will be celebrated in 2017 (XX edition) and 2018 (20 years, since it was “born” in 1998). At this time of the year, when the opening is around the corner, in May 31st, we have managed to gather together a nice handful of creators from different generations and approaches. Their works and ideas will be shown thanks to the compromise of historical and new collaborators and supporters of the Festival, public and private institutions, sponsors from different fields. Our desire is to celebrate, all together, the anniversary of the Festival but, mostly, photography itself.
M : What will be the main issues of the festival celebration ?
M. G. Y. : Although PHotoEspaña is, by nature, a thematic Festival, for the next two editions we have decided to develop projects that we aimed to make real without responding to a specific issue, to do them as a generic celebration of photography. In this sense, we will be looking backwards, to see how the field has changed in the last two decades, and also to try to figure out what seems to be the future of photography and visual arts. Although I can’t yet tell too much by now (the official presentation of PHotoEspaña 2017 will be on May 17th), I can “whisper” you that the programme will have a quite special heart: a “carte blanche” to a photographer that has been part of our history, whose vision combines intensity, extraordinary sensibility, audacity and profound knowledge.
M : During these years globalisation and digitalization have continuously transformed the photographic world, encouraging creativity, cross- fertilisation and new connexions with contemporary art, how will you treat with this area of « Post » ?
M. G. Y. : You can’t put fences to nature. Photography is intrinsically related to technology, their evolutions will always be related. It doesn’t mean that any image is photography. If no intention, no goal, no emotion is put on front of it, then it can’t be called photography.
