L’an passé, notre correspondant new-yorkais, Raphael Shammaa réunissait dans une conversation vidéo, les membres du Birthday Club, cinq femmes photographes diplômées de Yale à la même époque. Aujourd’hui, il consacre un entretien à l’une d’entre elles : Marion Belanger. Lauréate en 2017 du prix international Shpilman pour l’excellence en photographie, Marion a publié l’année précédente, « Rift | Fault » aux éditions Radius Books. Un travail qui documente Rift/Fault documente le déplacement des bords de la plaque nord-américaine le long du rift nord-atlantique.

Marion Belanger photographs the cultural landscape, particularly where geology and the built environment intersect. Her photographs are in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Art, International Center of Photography, Library of Congress, and the Yale University Art Gallery.  In addition to a Guggenheim Fellowship, she was an artist-in-residence at Everglades National Park, Lost and Found, and MacDowell.

Marion Belanger was an honoree for the 2017 Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography.  She was a twice a fellow at the American Scandinavian Foundation, and has received grants from the Kittredge Foundation, the Puffin Foundation and the Artist Resource Trust. The artist is the author of Everglades: Outside and Within, with an essay by Susan Orlean (Center for American Places at Columbia College Chicago, 2009), and Rift/ Fault, with an essay by Lucy Lippard (Radius Books, 2016), and Garden, Ranch House, and Edge (ROMAN NVMERALS).  She resides in Guilford, Connecticut and teaches at the Hartford Art School, and in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program at Wesleyan University. She belongs to the two collectives: The Birthday Club, and Environmental Photographers.

Raphael Shammaa, photographe, est né au Caire, en Égypte. Il est arrivé à Paris pour étudier l'art et l'architecture à l'Ecole des Beaux Arts. Il se passionne rapidement pour la photographie, et décide d'intégrer l'école de photographie à Vevey, en Suisse. Il se dirige dans la photographie publicitaire et de mode. Au début des années 60, il décide de vivre le rêve américain et emménage à New York. Son photobook “The Simplicity of the Moment” est classé l’un des 10 meilleurs de l’année 2017 par Elizabeth Avedon et fait partie de la collection permanente de 5 musées ou institutions dont l’International Center of Photography, le Metropolitan Museum of Art et le Brooklyn Museum of Art à New York.
